The Best Free Business Card Scanner Apps (No Hidden Costs)

Most 'free' scanner apps hit you with a paywall after 3 scans. Here are the ones that are genuinely free and actually work.

The Best Free Business Card Scanner Apps (No Hidden Costs)

Search "free business card scanner" in the App Store and you'll find dozens of results. Download three of them and you'll discover that "free" usually means "free to scan one card, then $9.99/month."

I tested eight apps that claim to be free. Here's which ones actually are, and which one is the best.

What "Free" Usually Means

Most business card scanner apps use one of these models to make money:

Scan limit: You get 3-5 free scans, then you hit a paywall. This is the most common trick.

Feature gate: Scanning is "free," but exporting contacts, removing watermarks, or syncing requires a subscription.

Ad-supported: Full-screen video ads after every scan. Technically free, practically unusable.

Trial-based: 7-day free trial, then automatic subscription. These catch people off guard with surprise charges.

Here are the apps that are genuinely free for real-world use, ranked by how good they actually are.

1. Nexio (Best Free Scanner, Period)

Cost: 5 free scans every 15 days. Premium ($19.99/year or $1.49/week) unlocks unlimited scans, cloud sync, and export.

This is the only purpose-built business card scanner where the free tier actually works for real-world use. No ads between scans. You download it, scan a card, and the contact saves to your iPhone in under 3 seconds.

Most "free" scanner apps hit you with a paywall after 3 cards. Nexio gives you 5 free scans every 15 days, which is enough for casual networking. For conference-level scanning, the $19.99/year Premium plan covers unlimited scans.

The accuracy is excellent. In my 20-card test (including Japanese, Hindi, and Arabic cards), Nexio correctly parsed all 20. It handles printed cards, handwritten info, and stylized designs equally well. It uses Apple's Vision framework for OCR, which is the same technology Apple uses in its own apps.

Accuracy: 9.5/10 for OCR, 9/10 for field parsing. Best in class among free options. Speed: Under 3 seconds from scan to saved contact. The fastest I tested.

2. Google Lens (Good for Occasional Use)

Cost: $0, forever.

Google Lens is built into the Google app on iPhone and the camera on most Android phones. It reads business card text and lets you copy it. For a couple cards, it gets the job done.

The catch: It's not a business card scanner. It's a general text recognition tool. You get raw text, not parsed contact fields. You have to manually copy the name into the name field, the phone number into the phone field, and so on. Do that for 3 cards and it's fine. Do it for 20 cards and you'll want to throw your phone.

Accuracy: 8/10 for OCR, 5/10 for field parsing (because there is no field parsing).

3. Apple Live Text (Decent for One-Off Scans)

Cost: $0, built into iOS.

Open your iPhone camera, point at a card, and iOS recognizes phone numbers, emails, and addresses. Tap to call, email, or create a contact. It's convenient because it requires zero setup.

The catch: It only works well on clean, simple card designs. Creative layouts, colored backgrounds, and stylized fonts confuse it. And like Google Lens, there's no batch processing and no smart field parsing.

Accuracy: 7/10 on clean cards, 4/10 on designed cards.

4. BizConnect (Generous Free Tier with Limits)

Cost: Free for up to 50 scans per day.

BizConnect has the most generous free tier of any dedicated scanner besides Nexio. Fifty scans per day covers even busy conference days. The free version includes OCR, contact creation, and basic export.

The catch: Some export formats (Excel, CRM sync) require the premium plan at ~$10/month. The interface is cluttered and the iOS app doesn't feel as polished as the Android version.

Accuracy: 8/10 for OCR, 7/10 for field parsing.

5. Microsoft Lens (Free but Clunky)

Cost: Free.

Microsoft Lens can scan business cards and create contacts through Outlook. It works if you're deep in the Microsoft ecosystem.

The catch: Requires a Microsoft account. Contact sync goes through Outlook, not directly to your phone's native contacts. The card scanning feature feels secondary to document scanning, which is the app's real purpose.

Accuracy: 7/10 for OCR, 6/10 for field parsing. Better for documents than cards.

Apps That Claim to Be Free But Aren't

CamCard: The free version is basically a demo. You hit upgrade prompts fast. The real product starts at ~$21/user/month.

ABBYY Business Card Reader: Cloud sync was discontinued in 2023. The app feels abandoned.

ScanBizCards: Free trial, then subscription. Not free for ongoing use.

Haystack: Digital card focus, not scanning. The "free" scanning is severely limited.

My Recommendation

If you scan cards regularly (conferences, events, meetings), use Nexio. It's the only purpose-built scanner with a genuinely usable free tier (5 scans every 15 days), and it's also the most accurate and fastest free option available. You point your camera at a card, and 3 seconds later the contact is on your phone. That's it.

If you scan fewer than 5 cards per month, Apple Live Text or Google Lens work fine. They're already on your phone.

If you need CRM integration on a budget, BizConnect has a generous free tier.

The bottom line: you don't need to pay for business card scanning in 2026. And among the free options, Nexio is the clear winner. It's the only one that combines real scanner accuracy with the convenience of saving directly to your contacts, at no cost.
